...breeding gulls. Wheeling overhead, they scavenged for dead fish and refuse-and picked the beaches clean. In 1962, William C. Scharf, a biologist at Northwestern Michigan College, counted 2,500 gulls' nests on nearby Bellows Island alone. This spring he found only 300. Why? Scharf partly blames dune-buggy drivers who careen through nesting grounds, plus harmful human discards like pop-top beer-can rings, which can injure hungry gulls. But the chief reason is heavy use of chlorinated hydrocarbons: DDT and its chemical cousins, dieldrin and chlordane...
...either. Initially it had great trouble with the candidate's name, which admittedly provides endless possibilities for exploitation. (The last name especially has good possibilities. Local high school students proved the most imaginative in this respect, trimming bumper stickers to read "Stud," and pasting them on their purple VW dune buggies.) Nothing could be harder than the sell for G.I. Joe with his own flamethrower; for Dune Buggy Wheelies ("Man, they're out of sight . . . get your friends up tight"); for seven bendable, flexible outer spacemen. For those sponsors, the action is in canned-laughter series or manic cartoon shows that are allowed up to 16 minutes of commercials per hourdouble the usual rate allowed...
