...Recent students, including Veronique Branquinho, Raf Simons, Bernhard Willhelm and the duo at A.F. Vandevorst, also set up shop in Antwerp; they travel the 400 km to Paris twice a year to show at the Prêt-à-Porter collections. This isolationist instinct doesn't end at choice of headquarters. The graduates from Flanders also shun mainstream publicity, rarely granting interviews and often refusing to be photographed. The reason? They say they want their work - the image of their designs - to speak for itself...

Unbeknownst to the duo, physicists at nearby Princeton University were about to turn their antenna on the heavens to look for that same signal. Astronomers had known since the 1920s that the galaxies were flying apart. But theorists had belatedly realized a key implication: the whole cosmos must at one point have been much smaller and hotter. About 300,000 years after the instant of the Big Bang, the entire visible universe would have been a cloud of hot, incredibly dense gas, not much bigger than the Milky Way is now, glowing white hot like a blast furnace...

...rock 'n' roll is made of lies. Paul is not dead; Marilyn Manson did not star in The Wonder Years; and emerging Detroit rock duo the White Stripes is not a brother-and-sister act. Though the press has long described the two as such, it turns out that singer/guitarist Jack White, 25, and drummer Meg White, 26, were married in 1996. Why hide it? Perhaps to avoid difficult questions about their divorce last year. Or maybe it was a clever way to promote their upcoming CD, White Blood Cells (Sympathy for the Record Industry), which, says Jack White...

...cult sci-fi novelist Philip K. Dick, Eric Satie, White Album-era Beatles, German electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk and the Beach Boys are all in there somewhere. But there's also impeccably modern production and the latest computer technology. Air transcends its influences to create something dazzlingly unique. The duo from Versailles - a well-off suburb west of Paris - has come up with a record staggering in its ambition, an unidentified musical object that explodes categories and looks a safe bet for the year's most influential album release...
