Nineteen-year-old Esthero, singer of a Toronto trip-hop duo that bears her name, is the newest member of the school of so-called blue-groove vocalists (it includes Skye Edwards of Morcheeba and Tracey Thorn of Everything but the Girl), who use the delivery and seductive lilt of jazz to bring warmth to chilly avant-garde pop. ...West Side Story (1961) will live forever. The moviemakers had taken Robbins's "Fancy Free" and etched it as On The Town in 1949; "West Side Story" he decided to do himself. Or nearly so; Robbins was teamed with Robert Wise as codirectors. They hated each other (when the duo received the Best Director Oscar jointly that year, neither acknowledged the other in his speech), but the child was beautiful. Russ Tamblyn's a dervish, Natalie Wood's a dream, and that finger-snapping? Gang war -- or Shakespeare, for that matter -- doesn't get any prettier...
...movie comes fifteen minutes earlier, when Murtaugh and Riggs clasp each other and pause for a moment after vanquishing the last villain. They have come a long way from their early days, and the scene captures that feeling even for those who don't know the duo's history. Like that scene, the movie as a whole takes both characters a step past their development in previous films, yet also manages to be an amusing, entertaining film complete in itself.
