Alexander the Great conquered the Near East and in the present Syrian hinterland founded a military colony, Europos. This was about 300 B.C. The next century the Parthians conquered the place; then, in the next, the Romans. The name became Dura. About the time of Jesus, the Romans retreated and desert sands quickly covered buildings. Brain. Just within the bony brain case are the meninges made up of three separate coverings-the dura mater, the arachnoid and the pia mater.
