...concert of ten major acts (including the Jefferson Starship, Joan Baez and Santana) in the city's 59,626-seat Kezar Stadium. The concert, on March 23, is called SNACK, Students Need Athletics, Culture and Kicks; the audience will pay a $5 admission to boogie down from midmorning to dusk. In addition, Graham will sell special SNACK T shirts for $4 each, and all proceeds, after expenses, will go to the schools...
...used to drive a '55 Mercury through town at dusk, when I wanted to be alone, heading for 1-70. Sometimes Ronda and Sheree joined me, but we made no demands on each other and they could be no different from solitude. The interstate circles around town a ways, before heading toward open country. It cleaves the dilapidated edge off of Topeka with one arching stroke, and clapboard shanties flank it like chips nicked from the blighted elm trees and dusty earth all around. When the highway beads clear of the shanties, the Kansas River sidles up to it instead...
...scene is enough to give even bird lovers a case of aviphobia. Every day at dusk for the past four months, five million blackbirds have screeched and wheeled over Christian County, Ky., ever narrowing their circle until, with a final frenzied flapping, they settle into their roosting spot-30 acres of pine trees in the midst of the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division base at Fort Campbell. At dawn the birds (mostly starlings and a scattering of grackles, cowbirds and red-winged blackbirds) take off to feast at local farms and feed lots. Again the sky darkens; again...
...that manages to be placating and threatening at the same time. Screenwriter Roth's dialogue has just the right tone of misdirected menace, although what service it performs remains rather unclear. Director Robert Mulligan (To Kill a Mockingbird, Summer of '42) creates a muffled texture of perennial dusk, and stages some fine set pieces (like a good-humored birthday party that the street citizens give Cooper). But, like Roth, he mistakes obliquity for essence. The Nickel Ride is a film of well-turned surfaces whose terse and moody lines dress up, but do not disguise, a shady frame...
However the AAAS committee also recommended the establishment of an Afro American research institute. The Faculty meeting of April 22, 1969 ratified the Afro proposal to "develop the Afro-American Research institute". Today, the W.E.B. DuBois Afro-American Research Institute remains on Bok's dusk. This fall, the administration indicated some interesting realizing the Institute by creating a 12 person advisory board to formulate proposals for its structure. Unfortunately the students or representative from the Afro Department sit on the board. In the response to their lack of participation in the founding of the Institute, a coalition of student groups...
