Died. Franz Stangl, 63, Austrian-born commandant of the Nazi death factories at Sobibor and Treblinka in Poland; of a heart attack; in his prison cell in Dusseldorf, Germany. During 1942 and 1943, when he ran Treblinka, Stangl supervised the slaughter of over 400,000 people. Wearing a spotless white SS jacket and sporting a long riding crop, he often arranged for brass bands to entertain his captives as they were herded into Treblinka's infamous gas "showers."
