...question that will determine this novel's fate (in the popular mind, anyway) is whether it will transcend these national bounds, or whether it will end up in the dustbin of "regional literature." I say that the dustbin is a pretty sure bet for this one. I more liked the novel than disliked it, but its author will survive in my mind mostly as a rising talent, not as a full-fledged master.
