...another great American tragedy, the Dust Bowl migration of the 1930s, people didn't wait for government help to rebuild in an untenable environment. Instead, they moved to places better suited to habitation. How much would it cost to build a reliable levee around New Orleans--$25 billion? $50 billion? For $25 billion, we could build a new $90,000 home for 275,000 households displaced by Katrina. Simple economics says New Orleans should not be rebuilt. CHARLIE SMITH Pittsburgh...

...tell, the director’s premise for the shoot was “Enya putzing around in Middle Earth.”In the video, the spritely Celtodiva meanders through a forest set, (eerily reminiscent of the Shire) singing to herself and collecting fairy dust as rain falls gently. She later climbs atop a mountain overlook and launches her dust into the heavens, where each luminescent granule is transformed into a star. Harvard astronomers have developed a new technique to map the structure of nebulae, the cosmic clouds of gas and dust from which stars are born. By combining near-infrared wavelengths with unusually deep exposures, Professor of Astronomy Alyssa A. Goodman and graduate student Jonathan B. Foster produced scientifically valuable images of cosmic clouds in far higher detail than ever before. Their “cloudshine” technique has yielded images of nebulae with resolutions that are 50 times higher than previous photographs, according to Goodman. Fellow astronomers hailed the “cloudshine” finding...
