...young, "hot" stars are losing far more of their matter in the process of maturation than had hitherto been thought: as much as the mass of the earth in a single year. Data from the orbiting astronomical satellite has also confirmed the presence of graphite crystals in the intergalactic dust beyond the Milky Way. Both phenomena should help scientists understand better how stars and galaxies evolve. With any luck, scientists believe, OAO-II could continue to probe the secrets of the universe for many more months...

They Shoot Horses, Don't They? is a strenuous attempt to make that marathon a metaphor for man's fate. The contestants are the populace of a wasted nation. One girl, Ruby (Bonnie Bedelia), is pregnant. Gloria (Jane Fonda) is a brassbound bitch from the Dust Bowl. Robert (Michael Sarrazin) is an open-faced kid from a farm. Other trophies of the Apollo 12 mission also preceded the astronauts to Houston. Some 80 Ibs. of lunar rock were delivered by midweek to eager scientists at the Lunar Receiving Laboratory (LRL). Although a thick coat of clinging dust prevented immediate detailed observation, geologists could see that several of the rocks were igneous-formed out of molten material like lava. They were also of a lighter hue than the brownish gray Apollo 11 rocks from the Sea of Tranquility-and much larger. The biggest of these "grapefruits," as Conrad had called them, weighed as much as four pounds and were...

...Preference. Owens grew up in Miami, a dust-blown town in northeastern Oklahoma, and he always wanted to play for the Sooners. He was six years old in 1953, when Oklahoma started its 47-game winning streak; he was ten when Notre Dame snapped it. "I can't think of anything that brought as much glory to the state as those teams did," he says. "Everybody followed them. When I was working at Hub's Bootery on Main Street, we didn't sell many shoes between noon and 4 on Saturdays...
