...bruising confrontations between military units and Iranian Muslims. But twelve hours after the disaster struck, as flights of C-130 aircraft set up a relief shuttle from Tehran, there was no enmity between soldiers and dissidents. Landing on a hastily bulldozed gravel strip that was almost obliterated by blowing dust, the C-130s unloaded medical teams, rescue units, field hospitals, food, medicine, blankets and water. By week's end almost 800 civilians who required major surgery had been airlifted to Tehran and other cities, while from Tabas, air force helicopters fanned out to assist survivors in surrounding villages...
Still, scientists are by no means certain that nature will follow their scenarios. The earth's climate is the product of such a complex mix of factors that it becomes impossibly difficult to isolate just one. For example, climatologists do not yet know the exact role of atmospheric dust. Dust can cool the earth by screening out warming sunlight, as has been noted after major volcanic eruptions like that of Krakatoa in 1883, yet also act as an atmospheric cap keeping in heat. Says Scripps' Charles Keeling: "Dust impedes radiation in both directions. We do not know...
...seemed to be a cooling phase. Some climatologists suggested that the chill marked the beginning of a "little ice age," like the one that persisted in Europe from about 1550 to 1850. If they are right, then the cooling forces-which could be attributable to anything from increased atmospheric dust to subtle changes in the amount of heat received from the sun-will be pitted against the warming force of the so-called greenhouse effect. For a while, at least, these two opposites might balance each other neatly...

...Once the dust settles from NBC's upheavals, the 1978-79 season may prove to be the most competitive in years. ABC is returning with its winning (and largely Silverman-created) schedule, along with five new series. In Battlestar Galactica, premiering Sept. 17, it has the fall's only sure ratings blockbuster. An elaborate space fantasy starring Bonanza's Lome Greene, the show's special effects are the work of Star Wars Wizard John Dykstra. But CBS has its strongest lineup since Silverman left that network in 1975. It remains to be seen whether...
