...basic plot of Dostoevsky's famous meditation on being and nothingness (long before Sartre took the patent out on those themes) serves as the starting point of the Durang/Innaurato collaboration: four brothers, tempestuous love, life, death, etc, etc. But it doesn't take long to leave Dostoevsky in the dust as Durang and Innaurato jump full force into the whole of literature since the Book of Genesis. Durang has always been something of the Tom Stoppard of absurdist drama, but in The Idiots Karamazov he outdoes himself. Insert famous femme fatale Anas Nin, lover to the likes of Henry Miller...

...gross mistake. I purposefully dressed more casually. I sat on the floor Indian-style. I even sang horrible Backstreet Boys songs to show I was hip. All this posturing to no avail. The kids were convinced. At first I chalked it up to their own over-eagerness. As the dust settled, however, I realized that I was the one who was mistaken. In fact, every Harvard student who still believes that they are the same fun-loving slacker they were in high school is also mistaken. ...Governor George W. Bush. Lately, he had given off a slight whiff of Dan Quayle, and his first debate was imminent. Senator John McCain was showing surprising strength. And surely there must be some Oval Office envy, given that one of their own had left them in the presidential dust. Stare in the mirror now, and at best there's a Vice President staring back. I was certain there would be some hurt feelings when Bush dissed the meeting entirely, even though he was only 15 minutes away in San Diego raising money...
