Wartime Snafu. Honestly surprised by the furor, Thieu and Ky called a press conference of their own to ex plain what went wrong. Far from being sabotage, the dustup at Dong Ha, said Thieu, was only a wartime snafu. And the person most responsible for the foul-up was not a government official; he was the chairman of the central cam paign committee, whom the civilian candidates themselves had appointed. The chairman had failed to give the province chief the correct information. But even though the reception committee found itself at the wrong airstrip, Thieu continued, it rushed to Dong...
Still, loyalties are never long-lived in Laos, and Souvanna's fragile web of alliances-of groups loyal to the top ten ruling families, to the military and to other regional powers besides himself-could easily rip. Fiery Neutralist General Kong Le, who fled Laos after a dustup over dragons' eggs (TIME, Oct. 21), was in Indonesia and uneasily noncommittal. Army Commander Kouprasith, who has his own ambitions for Laos, was enigmatically silent. A lot would depend on how Souvanna Phouma and the new Assembly get along together after it convenes in early February...

Hotchner had appropriated literary material that rightfully belonged to her as Hemingway's beneficiary, and accused Hotchner of "shameless penetration into my private life and the usurpation of it for money" (TIME, Feb. 11). Hotchner certainly will make money from this book: serialization rights were sold to the Saturday Evening Post for about $50,000, it is a Book-of-the-Month Club selection, and, with 60,000 copies in print, it is clearly destined...
...candidates from six national parties are haranguing voters for 450 seats in the National Assembly. The official campaign is confined to three weeks - just as well, considering Turkish tempers. Last week peasants in one remote town stoned and clubbed leaders of the pseudo-Communist Turkish Labor Party. A major dustup was narrowly averted in Ankara when Labor Party supporters tried to break up a rally of the ultra-conservative Republican Peasants' Nation Party...
Mario Savio, the student chiefly responsible for the dustup, said: "It sounds like a great report." And Byrne won other support. Regent Buff Chandler called it "a good piece of research, well written, with many salient points." Her family newspaper, the Los Angeles Times, published all 85 pages. Governor Pat Brown called it "very thoughtful, very provocative, a good report." U.C.L.A.'s Chancellor Franklin Murphy agreed with its major points...
