...matter what the exterior looks like, the skyscraper can be a problematic building--isolated, aloof from its neighbors and boring inside, a pancake stack of identical floor plates with a lobby at the bottom and maybe a restaurant at the top. For years now, Rem Koolhaas, the oracular Dutch architect and urban theorist, has conducted an unrelenting rhetorical campaign against the skyscraper. "The promise it once held," he wrote recently, "has been negated by repetitive banality [and] carefully spaced isolation...
Adding to the concerns about antidepressant use, a Dutch report in the Archives of Internal Medicine highlighted another problem with the pills: abnormal bleeding. Patients taking drugs that strongly inhibit reuptake of serotonin--a neurotransmitter that aids both mood and blood clotting--were at least twice as likely to be hospitalized for bleeding in the brain, uterus and other sites than patients taking weaker drugs. So-called SSRIs, including Prozac and Paxil, were among the strongest drugs. The risk is small, however, and most serious for patients already at elevated risk for bleeding...
...carb potato has arrived. Developed by a Dutch seed company, the smooth yellow tuber has 30% fewer carbohydrates and 25% fewer calories than the average Russet Burbank. But in the eight months since, Van der Veer, 57, has done a lot more than those jotted notes suggest. He has radically overhauled Shell's management and governance structure. After months of discussions with regulators and institutional investors, Shell announced in November the full merger...
...fierce battle to acquire iconic fashion group Gucci for $9 billion. Then, earlier this year, he allowed Gucci's creative director, Tom Ford, and its chief executive, Domenico De Sole, to walk out the door after the collapse of talks to renew their contracts. Weinberg tapped Robert Polet, a Dutch consumer-goods executive who is an ice cream expert but has no fashion experience, to take over...
