Among those at the most practical pole of space science is Astronauticist Charles Draper. In his capacity as head of M.I.T.'s Instrumentation Lab, Draper in 1960 was working on guidance systems for space vehicles of the Dyna-Soar type ?vehicles with supporting wings to get them out of the earth's atmosphere. He sees little future for manned space exploration in Project Mercury, which uses a ballistic missile, which is shot like a bullet, has no wings and not much control after it is fired. "That's sort of like going over Niagara Falls in a barrel," says...

This is the landing system that will be employed by Dyna-Soar, the Air Force's $700 million, Boeing-built, maneuverable space vehicle, scheduled for first flight tests about 1964. Designed to be fired into orbit atop a Titan missile, Dyna-Soar is the closest thing to a spaceship in development now in the U.S. The dog capsule appears to put Russia well ahead of the U.S. in spaceship manufacture; its massive weight indicates that the passenger cabin probably will be large enough to support a crew of three men for a sustained period of flight...

...SPACE CONTRACTS will help U.S. planemakers take up slack from military-aircraft cutbacks. The latest: $65 million to Douglas for Saturn second-stage units; $50 million to Lockheed for 16 Agena-B rocket vehicles; $29.7 million to Boeing and Martin to start work on Dyna-Soar space glider. NASA space spending is expected to total $2.5 billion annually...
