...until the lbis flew back to Freedom Square. A full board of the Crimson editors convened that evening and unanimously elected the lbis as president of the newspaper in the absence of the not notably popular Maccoby. John H. Updike '54, president of the Lampoon, set Cambridge on its ear by announcing shortly there after that 'No Crimson editor can rest safe in his bed. We promise in a week to depopulate Cambridge totally of this unfortunate element...
...sententious. His austere tone evokes a more troubled, yearning Omar whose tippling is a metaphor for religious mysticism. Yet, surprisingly for a poet of his skill and grace, Graves often lapses into ungainly syntax, primly avoids rhymes, and altogether misses the colorful, melodious murmur that so entrances the ear and emotions in FitzGerald. He may be deliberately exercising his classical restraint or making an overzealous try for accuracy. In any case, he stiffens the flow of the poem. Here is one of FitzGerald's best-known quatrains...
...Biographer Michael Holroyd argues that the author of Eminent Victorians belongs in the forefront of the Bloomsberries, and then substantiates the claim through 1,229 improbably fascinating pages. Strachey's is one of the legitimately original voices of the era, and it has suffered from a conspiracy of ear plugging. Though his work has always been read, especially in the U.S., his reputation after his death in 1932 was increasingly demeaned by historians, who dismissed his readability as shallowness, his hyperbole as untruthfulness, and his point of view as malicious bias. In Eminent Victorians, Strachey provided four desecrating portraits...
Decelerating Bang. Recalling an ear lier suggestion that soft X rays would be given off by hot, thinly dispersed hydrogen gas, the NRL scientists turned to their computers. To produce the detected radiation, they calculated, the temperature of the gas would have to be 1,400,000° F. and its density only one atom of hydrogen in every 3.5 cu. ft. of space. But even at this low density, says Astrophysicist Henry, the hydrogen gas would constitute 100 times as much matter as there is in all of the galaxies combined and thus solve the mystery of the universe...
...like an operatic or cinematic spectacular. The intellectual substance (and thus, the dramatic substance, for after all, this is Shaw) of the play is contained in a series of richly humorous but intimate conversations, between two, three, or four major characters. These are scenes directed primarily at the ear, and it is in them that the production is at its best. Eddying about the pivotal encounters, however, is Shaw's depiction of the varied and colorful life of the Egyptian court and Roman camp. These physical details call for the best sort of visualization and stage realization, and I wonder...
