...Christopher Eccleston as the traitorous Duke of Norfolk and Santa Claus-lookalike Richard Attenborough as earnest advisor Sir William Cecil, reveal their allegiances too broadly to become truly fearful or fascinating. By contrast, Rush's lurking performance leaves everything to the imagination: Walsingham whispers sweet Machiavellian nothings in the ear of the Queen between sessions slitting the throats of the boys he buggers...

...horror turns out to conceal nothing besides yet more superficiality. And blood. Blood, limbs and gore, in all of their nauseating variations. Here is where Very Bad Things shows itself to be neither "dark" nor "comedy." Somehow Peter Berg, the director, has decided that because the severing of an ear can be a scene at once terrifying and hilarious in Reservoir Dogs, then any scene of dismemberment is terrifying and hilarious. Lay down a bass line, add percussion and instrumentation--the software will even resolve the key so that everything harmonizes. What...

...Master Georgie reminds one, again, that war correspondents do not always get it right. As Bainbridge's group slogs across the Crimean peninsula, men and animals dropping from cholera and in battle all around them, the scene becomes surreal. At one point a soldier shows up with his ear blown off. "He kept shaking our hands in turn and saying how happy he was to meet us...the blood flying in all directions as he pumped," Pompey Jones recalls. "Then he dropped dead...
