Tripp's "I am you" speech was similar to the one given earlier in the day by another misunderstood victim, Mike Tyson. He wanted the New Jersey Athletic Control Board to know that biting off Evander Holyfield's ear hurt him deeply--although Tyson's ear is just fine while Holyfield's needed surgery. Similarly, Tripp would have us believe that everything she did hurt her more than it hurt Monica. Now that Monica is accusing her for the first time--of helping to write the talking points--she may actually find out what being accused of a felony...
...difficult moments, it's important to be among kindred souls. So when MIKE TYSON appeared for his boxing-reinstatement hearing last week before the New Jersey State Athletic Board, he brought along a few character witnesses. Explaining why Tyson might have bitten off a portion of Evander Holyfield's ear in a fight last year, former light-heavyweight champ Bobby Czyz offered, "If I hit an opponent and his eye fell out...I would eat it before he would get it back." Alas, even this touching testimonial did not comfort Tyson. After some tough questioning, the boxer became tearful, then...
...reward for being a suck-up. Ballmer operates at a decibel level bordering on OSHA's mandatory ear-protection threshold, a one-man surround-sound. He and Gates, who became fast friends in 1973 during their freshman year at Harvard, have always enjoyed what they refer to as a "high bandwidth" relationship; it means they can scream at each other but are still able to listen and respond. "We fairly well anticipate what the other guy is thinking, and can finish each other's sentences," says Ballmer of his 25-year relationship with Gates. "That doesn't mean we always...
...other hand, this cousin was an ear-nose-and-throat specialist by training. The doctor who reportedly chopped Paula Jones' schnozz is a plastic surgeon who charges $9,000 a pop. That must be reassuring for Jones; in medical matters, as in so much of high-end commerce in this country, shameless overcharging is a great confidence builder. For the rest of us, it's reassuring to know that this procedure took place in New York rather than California, where Jones lives. If the surgery does happen to result in litigation, the medical-malpractice attorney who defends the surgeon would...
With Charlton Heston as its newly elected president [SPECIAL REPORT, July 6], the National Rifle Association hopes to appeal to mainstream America. The plan may backfire. Even an actor who has portrayed Moses can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. And though Heston's celebrity attracts media attention, the hateful sentiments conveyed by that golden voice will more likely guarantee a continuing decline in N.R.A. membership. Heston's outspoken and controversial reflections may win the applause of the right wing, but his inflammatory rhetoric is repugnant to most Americans, including real sportsmen. KATHLEEN GREGG Pearl...
