That career was soon linked, in a way that made political history, to the career of another fast-rising California Republican: Alameda County District Attorney Earl Warren. Old J.R. always had been a staunch backer of young Earl Warren. Warren and Billy first met about the time Herbert Hoover was campaigning against Al Smith in 1928. Warren was struck by the political skill and vigor of the man 17 years his junior. Says Warren: "You had to admire him." The admiration was mutual. Knowland became a leading spirit among the young California Republicans who were later Warren's greatest...

...disciple of Clement Attlee, he was elected Leader of the Parliamenatry Labor party in December, 1955, on Earl Attlee's resignation. When Commons is in session he commutes to London from his Victorian house in Hampstead (he rents a five-room apartment upstairs), usually picking up a friend on the London outskirts. Benjamin Neilson, as the other Earl, is not troubled by this latter difficulty, but carries himself well and obscures none of the humor, which is all that counts. The Lord Chancellor, Arthur Waldstein, has an even less prepossessing voice, and occasionally his froggish hops seem uncertain and feeble, but he does manage some of Gilbert's speedier lyrics, all the while conveying a most Chancellorial wizenedness. Perhaps less sure of himself on stage...
