...from him -which is usually sex." Actress Valerie Perrine's candor, revealed in an interview with New York Times Reporter Judy Klemesrud, may not attract many serious suitors, but her powerfully honest portrayal of the stripper-turned-junkie wife of Lenny Bruce in the film Lenny may just earn her an Academy Award nomination. Perrine has already gone into training to become Hollywood's newest sex symbol. "I've experimented with almost every drug known to man," she told Klemesrud. "But now I don't even smoke grass. It gives me the munchies...
...wasn't the only instance of sexual inequality we encountered. We visited a neighborhood light-bulb and lantern factory, for instance, where the workers were all women earning considerably less than their husbands in state-administered factories. In both places people on the revolutionary committees assured us that equality of income would someday come, that before 1949 women hadn't been able to earn anything at all. People were also moderately apologetic, when we brought the subject up, about the disproportionately few women on nearly all the revolutionary committees. The article goes on to say that a lettuce worker can earn up to $12,000 in a good year. A more typical average income is the $6800 median family income in the Salinas Valley, the center of the lettuce industry. This is higher than most farmworkers' incomes, but it is still only 62 per cent of the state median...

Farmworkers earn only about 50 per cent of the median state income; over 20 per cent live below the poverty line (1970 U.S. Census). They suffer lethal accident rates 300 per cent above the national average (National Safety Council). They often have dangerous pesticides sprayed on them while working (U.S. Labor Department, Special Review Staff), and 80 per cent suffer at least one symptom of pesticide poisoning (California state study, reported in Fresno Bee, 9/26/69...
