...Gable," she said in her Playboy interview when she was named Playmate of the Year in 1993. Her acting credits - Carrie Wisk, a daredevil helicopter pilot in the self-produced action move Skyscraper or Lucy, in another self-produced flick Illegal Aliens a tale of of space aliens rescuing Earth from evil - never matched Monroe's. Her short-lived reality show, "The Anna Nicole Show" was the highest rated program on the E! network. It was quickly cancelled but not before it offered a glimpse of her battles with drugs and weight, the plagues of other Great American Blondes...
Consider the case closed on global warming. The assessment released on Feb. 2 by the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concluded for the first time that evidence of the earth's rising temperatures was "unequivocal"-and that this warming was more than 90% likely the result of human activity. We are locked into some amount of climate change: the IPCC reported that even if we managed to end all greenhouse-gas emissions today, the earth would continue to warm through the rest of the century because of the amount of carbon we have already added...
Consider the case closed on global warming. The assessment released this month by the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concluded for the first time that evidence of the earth's rising temperatures was "unequivocal" and that this warming was more than 90% likely to be the result of human activity. The report's authors--some 600 scientists from 40 countries--also noted that we are locked into more climate change. Even if all greenhouse-gas emissions miraculously ended today, the earth would continue to warm through the rest of the century because of the amount of carbon...
...that helicopters flying in combat are accidents waiting to happen. Unlike their fixed-wing brethren, helicopters tend to be slow, which on the battlefield is another word for vulnerable. Beyond that, they tend to fly low, hugging the contours of the terrain in what pilots called nap-of-the-earth flight (that's what upsets unpracticed bellies). The tactic certainly reduces the helicopter's exposure to enemy fire from below, but it doesn't eliminate it. Helicopter pilots speak warily of "golden BBs" that can bring down their bird. There are a fair number of bull's-eyes on those...
...hating, the occupation. But in a land so old, 21 years is merely an instant. Civilizations are piled on top of one another (Hebrew, Assyrian, Babylonian, Persian, Greek, Hellenistic, Maccabean, Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Egyptian, crusader, Mameluke, Ottoman, on and on), all the laminations that conquerors have left in the earth there -- a rich debris of meanings and promises and desires. The accumulation of passion and memory, so much of it implicated with God, can make the land seem at times both wondrous and psychotic. There are certain parallels between Israel and America -- both nations born with a mission, both ingatherings...
