There may be someone on earth - a cloistered abbess, perhaps, or a Taliban soldier in a particularly remote post - who has yet to learn that High School Musical 3 opened last Friday. (It promptly leaped to the top of the U.S. box office, to the tune of a $42 million weekend take, and was No. 1 in each of the 19 international markets in which it opened.) But it's a rare human who hasn't at least heard of the Disney tween hit, given the passion of its fans and the zeal of Disney's promotion. What began...

...ground he thought he had locked up months ago. In Prince William County, about 30 miles south of Washington, he told a crowd of around 10,000 that electing Barack Obama would bring a new wave of socialism to the U.S. "America didn't become the greatest nation on earth by giving our money to the government to 'spread the wealth around,'" he said outside the county government headquarters in Woodbridge. McCain and Palin tried to build fences, looking for safe ground; Obama bulldozed them in search of common ground. "Despite what...

During their stay, these visitors would have seen mechanical golden songbirds on the boughs of jeweled trees and a hydraulic throne that lifted the Emperor 30 ft. above his subjects. Today, the relics of the Byzantine Empire - which for more than 1,000 years stretched from its capital (now called Istanbul) into the eastern Mediterranean, Russia, the Middle East and beyond - continue to dazzle. Running through March...

Finally, last September, I went on an eco-trip of my own (on assignment for this magazine) to Madagascar, the utterly unique and fascinating island off the southeast coast of Africa. Madagascar has wildlife that is found nowhere else on Earth and a prodigious variety of climates and vegetation that makes it virtually a planet unto itself. Ecology is what defines Madagascar - and what I discovered there, among other things, is that ecotourism when properly managed is not only not a scam, but a boon to conservation...
