...missed, and muttering to himself in a cold rage, Gilmore followed the MIG through another wrenching, rolling loop of a brain-draining six gravities, then cut loose a third Sidewinder. The enemy's tail section came apart in a tumble of torn metal, and the plane pitched earthward. In fact, Gilmore's first Sidewinder had also scored, and the Red pilot had ejected. In getting the first MIG-21, Gilmore had killed it twice...
Water Pistols. Whenever possible, the astronauts cast their eyes earthward to see how much could be described from 200 miles out in space. On the fourth day, Conrad's 20/15 vision picked out the contrails of planes flying below, the streets of Jacksonville, and the wake of a ship off the coast of Florida. He also took pictures of the landscape, including Cuba. Spy in the sky? "Just scenic shots," said Conrad dryly...
...Homer Dotts firmly dispelled all rumors of a possible goof by Astronauts Gus Grissom and John Young. According to Dr. Dotts, the capsule did not develop as much lift during re-entry as had been predicted from preflight wind-tunnel tests. With less gliding ability, the capsule plunged earthward on a steep trajectory that aimed her short of the target. By the time Grissom had calculated the trajectory on his computer, and realized that Molly was getting less lift than expected, it was too late to correct the error. Fortunately, the lift data obtained from Molly's minor mishap...
...Stars. Where Tiros was aimed uselessly out into space much of the time, Nimbus forever focuses earthward - the result of infra-red controls, which utilize warmth radiated from the earth to keep Nimbus pointed in the right direction. This alone means four to five times more cloud cover photographs. Nimbus' size (830 lbs.) is its greatest advantage, allowing room for a set of daylight cameras that take photos five times clearer than Tiros' best cameras took, and enough batteries on board to supply transmitters with 450 watts of power v. 20 watts for Tiros...
...than in cold air. If a sound wave, rising through the sub-zero temperatures below the upper jet stream, suddenly hit a layer nearly as warm as the earth's surface, the top of the wave front, he figured, would accelerate. The whole front would then bend back earthward and rumble down. Diamond figured that he might be able to bounce a boom off the upper stream, predict its course, and record the boom as it came back to earth, thus helping to confirm his rocket data...
