...Ponder Heart (adapted from Eudora Welty's story by Joseph Fields and Jerome Chodorov) puts all its slightly addled eggs in one basket-the basket of charm. Since they are really all Easter eggs to begin with, the thing works out very well. The whole Southern small-town tale of a lovable, eccentric ne'er-do-ill put on trial for murder has a light pastel daffiness about it, a way of making life look delightfully woozy through wrong-prescription rose-colored glasses...

When U.S. forces invaded Okinawa on Easter Sunday in 1945, some divisions were assigned to hit the beaches and engage the known enemy, the Japanese army, while others were held aboard ships bobbing offshore, as replacements for men expected to be knocked out of battle by a second enemy, unseen and almost unknown. ...Wynn, Ray Bolger, Bing Crosby. Sullivan is the first to admit that any one of these entertainers makes his own talents seem dim indeed. On camera, Ed has been likened to a cigar-store Indian, the Cardiff Giant and a stone-faced monument just off the boat from Easter Island. He moves like a sleepwalker; his smile is that of a man sucking a lemon; his speech is frequently lost in a thicket of syntax: his eyes pop from their sockets or sink so deep in their bags that they seem to be peering up at the camera from...

...Easter chick can be a poor gift for a child, Minnesota doctors found after checking what happened in Hennepin County last year: twelve persons (six of them infants under a year old) had a severe intestinal disorder, marked by fever, diarrhea, blood in the stool and vomiting, after exposure to chicks infected (as many poultry are) with bacteria called Salmonella typhimurium...
