...Nina Easton must have never been on unemployment, or she would know better than to take such a cavalier attitude toward Americans suffering from the loss of their livelihood [Jan. 25]. To be forced to rely on unemployment benefits, in my experience, in no way contributes to "warping incentives to look for work." A job search takes earnest effort and several months' time, even in better times than these; many of the "lower-paying, less desirable jobs" she cites are passed up because they will not support a household. ...Easton makes a fair, unbiased and thoughtful case for not extending jobless benefits ad infinitum. Unfortunately, stopping those benefits would have catastrophic results. It would cause millions of new foreclosures, leave millions of people unable to afford medication and create a vast new army of homeless Americans.
