...country. The U. S. Golf Association took full recognition of this fact in giving the women's national championship to the Los Angeles Country Club-a sharply trapped, rolling course with an annoying barranco and plenty of trees. The California women who had been paying their fares eastward year after year were to be given a chance at home. Nevertheless, impartial critics did not give them much chance against the little group of top-notch players from the East-National Champion Glenna Collett; broad-shouldered, jut-jawed Maureen Orcutt; chubby, thick-muscled Helen Hicks; Virginia Van Wie of Chicago...

...Pearl & Broad Streets, served as senior warden of Trinity Church, bought land in what is now Westchester County. When he had accumulated an estate of 83,000 acres extending ten miles along the Hudson River north from the Croton River and "a day's journey" [20 mi.] eastward to the Connecticut line, he built himself a fort-like house of red sandstone, with loopholes, cannon em-brasures, 3-ft. walls. An earth inductor compass, a magnetic compass on the conventional instrument board and maps were his navigating facilities. The westward flight, as every layman knows, is immeasurably more difficult largely because of prevailing headwinds. The Question Mark...

...whizzed off the runway of Glendale Airport, Los Angeles, last week, hurdled the San Bernardino mountains, shot across the Mojave Desert to greet the rising sun, roared into Albuquerque in 3 hr. 26 min. The speed indicator clung close to 250 m.p.h. as the low-winged bullet tore eastward to Wichita. Next came a mid-afternoon stop at Indianapolis and then, three hours later, Curtiss Airport, Valley Stream L. I.-a new transcontinental record...
