...inevitable showdown, the two men make a lot of threatening sounds but never get around to any blood sport. Two hotheads, they reason, are better than one, and together they ride out to gun down a gang of Mexican bank robbers and split the reward. As Van Cleef and Eastwood close in for the kill, bodies begin to pile up like cordwood, and enough lead is exchanged to re-equip the Egyptian army. Long before the end, the violence becomes a bit like a Grand Guignol show-raucous, incessant and absurd...

Leone thrusts this hero forward insistently. The camera is tight on Clint Eastwood as he chews his cigar, clips a sentence, tips his hat, swallows soup. The concentration creates a giant out of a so-so Rawhide type. At the final confrontation with his enemies, Eastwood appears out of a cloud of dynamite dust...

Whatever his financial arrangements, Actor Eastwood, the sometime star of television's Rawhide, is certainly not paid by the word. In Fistful he hardly talks at all. Doesn't shave, either. Just drawls orders. Sometimes the bad guys drawl back. Just as tersely. Trouble is, after they stop talking, their lips keep moving. That's because the picture is dubbed. Like the villains, it was shot in Spain. Pity it wasn't buried there...
