...Hope was on hand with bipartisan gibes: "Jack Benny is a Republican for Mc-Govern-but only until he gets the $1,000" and "McGovern called his own headquarters, and Clark MacGregor answered the phone." Nixon sounded a loftier note. "We will end the war," he said-an echo from the campaign four years ago. His administration would be remembered, he hoped, for "changing the world," for "reducing the possibility for wars in the future." The trip ended as it had begun: under tight rein. The President had not slipped. As an aide put it: "We are not going...
Boorman concentrates on the hard-core how rather than the obvious why. The reasons for men's actions in such extreme predicaments are clear, and do not need some sort of metaphysical explanation. The few lines remaining which echo Dickey's cock-eyed pantheism are mouthed by a character, the film's Lewis, who's close to caricature anyway. (All the book's characters are generalized in the film, and we don't know the last name of any or their occupations.) The difference between Boorman and Dickey is best summed up by the director's depiction of a moral...
...intervention of power. Because that is not just a violation of 'freedom to publish'; it is the stopping of the heart of a nation, a laceration of its memory." In some cases, though, like the question of guaranteed annual income, the differences may be in rhetoric and degree rather than in principle. In addition, Nixon seemed to be ignoring 1964, when Barry Goldwater proclaimed "a choice, not an echo." Perhaps more significant, the President was forgetting 1932, the year when F.D.R. defeated Herbert Hoover in one of the deep-sea changes of American life. Whether McGovern's program would affect the U.S. as deeply as the New Deal did is an open question. The issues of 1972 have...
ABOUT the first of every month, millions of apartment dwellers echo a familiar and bitter complaint: while homeowners get large tax breaks as well as investment equity in their houses, a renter's lifetime collection of monthly receipts adds up to just so much confetti in the wind. In search of a better deal, more and more erstwhile tenants are moving to condominiums, in which occupants hold legal title to their apartments instead of mere leases. This form of housing was devised in medieval Europe, has long been popular abroad, and lately has become the fastest-rising development...
