Miami Beach's Eden Roc Hotel is suitably sumptuous for a display of the attributes of success, wealth and power. There, successful, wealthy, powerful Jimmy Hoffa conferred with the executive council of his corrupt Teamsters Union. It was a time for plans, expansion and confidence-not for worrying over the long, unchallenged record of Teamster racketeering dug up by Senator John McClellan's long-frustrated rackets committee. With his retinue of vice presidents, lawyers and investment advisers, jaunty little Jimmy worked on an 8 a.m.-to-1 a.m. schedule, spending lavishly, granting favors, hearing petitioners, mapping campaigns...
...Communist. Fearful of changing the status quo in Germany but equally fearful of doing nothing, statesmen of a dozen nations are today earnestly reexamining solutions to the problem proposed by ingenious men ranging from Poland's Communist Foreign Minister Adam Rapacki to Britain's Sir Anthony Eden. For a concise guide to these past proposals and the future possibilities, see FOREIGN NEWS, What To Do About Germany...
...common: the assumption that because the U.S.S.R. refuses to accept reunification of Germany by free elections (as it originally promised), the West must buy a German settlement by surrendering some of its own positions of strength. Sole exception to this rule is the formula advanced by Sir Anthony Eden at Geneva in 1955, and revived in the House of Commons last week by Foreign Secretary Selwyn Lloyd. Its basic provisions: Germany should be reunited by free elections and allowed to determine its own foreign policy (the NATO treaty does not commit a reunified Germany to membership). If united Germany chose...
Apart from the Eden Plan, no one has yet suggested a disengagement proposal that would not gravely endanger the military security of the Western nations. Communist Rapacki's projected nuclear freeze would seriously weaken NATO's ability to defend itself against Russia's vastly larger conventional forces, and would constitute a major victory for Moscow. Any plan that entails German withdrawal from NATO would probably lead to complete U.S. military withdrawal from Europe, since no Western European country save West Germany can be expected to play host to more than 175,000 U.S. soldiers...
...Curling, the Daily Telegraph's horse expert, to 30 of the finest blooded fillies in London. Dair & Co. had cause to hear a betting and breeding lecture. As students at the Cygnets House, the most exclusive finishing school in England, they must learn to "talk politics with Eden at lunch on Monday, ballet with Dame Margot on Tuesday, racing with Aly Khan on Wednesday...
