...When I heard the New York band’s eponymous 2004 LP in the summer of 2006, it sounded positively Californian, except edgier than the Beach Boys and possibly more harmonic than The Mamas and the Papas. I was ashamed to be two years late in my discovery, yet at the same time, excited—I figured that their second album was imminent...

...mouse chase reminiscent of a psychologically insightful “Tom and Jerry” episode, with all its hilarity and absurdity intact. In this overture, Millhauser seems to be flexing his literary muscles for what is to come. With a temperament far more frenetic and edgier than any of the following stories, the opening cartoon seems to show off Millhauser’s descriptive meticulousness—a meticulousness that haunts the rest of his stories, without quite managing to be fully polished into brilliance. The first chapter, entitled “Vanishing Acts,” deals in disappearances...

...Robb. Why? Do you get a secret thrill out of it? -Clint Hues, Quinton, VA It's marketing. I write very quickly, and publishers can't publish just me-they want other authors too. So I agreed to try it if I could do something different. These books are edgier and much different from what I do under my own name, so putting it under a pseudonym helps brand it for the reader...
