...Edmund Muskie's profile suggests that if enough people were to read the report, the Senator from Maine would be a long way toward recovery from the blows he suffered during his disastrous presidential primary campaign. The profile not only corrects the "wishy-washy" image he picked up last spring but also contradicts an earlier Nader study-group report that accused Muskie of foot dragging on environmental issues. This time around, Nader's researcher gave "Mr. Clean" high marks on environment and almost everything else. He is, the report notes, "a crack prosecuting attorney" possessed of "native intelligence...

Know Nothing. As the fumes of Watergate continued contaminating the atmosphere of the election year, there were other hints of "fun." The Washington Post reported last week that a letter to New Hampshire's Manchester Union Leader accusing Edmund Muskie of a racial slur against French Canadians may have been written by Ken W. Clawson, deputy director of White House communications. A Post reporter, Marilyn Berger, claimed that Clawson told her that he had written the note, which said Muskie had condoned the epithet "Canuck," an insult to New England's French Canadians. The letter, published over...

...York Philanthropist Stewart Mott, now a prime McGovern benefactor, in 1968 when Mott wanted Humphrey to denounce the Viet Nam War more strongly. Mott denies this, but he has tried to influence the positions of other candidates. Sounded out by Texas oil interests during the Democratic primaries this year, Edmund Muskie passed up much cash because he refused to abandon his intention of trying to lower the oil-depletion allowance. Most gifts, of course, do not come with such specific conditions, yet when accepted they often have a subtle, if not sinister effect. Explains Humphrey: "If you're kind...

...most significant environmental legislation in the history of Congress," said Ohio Representative William Harsha. "The means to eliminate the cancer of water pollution," said Senator Edmund Muskie of Maine. With such encomiums, the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 swept through Congress last week by 74-0 in the Senate and 366-11 in the House. Despite this massive approval, the big question was: Would President Nixon sign the bill into...
