...Manzie, 15, had allegedly been involved in a sexual relationship with 43-year-old Stephen Simmons of Holbrook, N.Y., a convicted pederast whom Manzie had met over the Internet. Since late August, though, Manzie, with the consent of his parents, had been assisting New Jersey prosecutors in an effort to build a criminal case against Simmons for sexual abuse. Manzie kept up phone contact with Simmons so their conversations could be taped. Three weekends ago, however, the boy took a hammer to the recording device police had installed in his family's home, destroyed tapes and announced that he would...
...perfection, violinist Gil Shaham may be the classical music world's most polished performer. By the end of his performance with the Boston Symphny Orchestra Saturday night, he had convinced the rapt audience at Symphony Hall that Mendelssohn violin concertos simply grew out of his gleaming Stradivarius without effort, toil or even a few hours' practice...
Their latest effort, Boom! Boom! Boom!, is a catchy smorgasbord of styles. The album definitely has its roots in rock, revealing influences as diverse as Black Sabbath and the Cowboy Junkies. Although original and often complex, the songs always remain accessible and gracefully simple. As expected, the live show gave many songs an urgency they don't have on the CD. The Kelley Deal 6000 is the first outfit for which Deal has written songs, and she considers herself a newcomer to the art. She characterizes her move into song writing...
...music is impressive enough. But The Kelley Deal 6000 tours without the plush accouterments of a big-name rock band. After The Breeders and rehab, Deal effectively restarted her career. She had the Deal legacy to build on, but decided anyway to start her own label in an effort to define herself as Kelley Deal, apart from her identity as an ex-Breeder. Ross is the only roadie. As a nascent label, Nice Records can't afford a palatial tour bus. They drive around the country in a comfortable RV that was parked around the block from the Middle East...
