Hitherto unknown, at least by me, Henrik Rehr seems to have come from nowhere with a natural, realist drawing technique and a clear, seemingly effortless narrative style. Wisely conservative, Rehr knows that the dramas of that day need no enhancements. The advantage of drawing such events seems clear: they are indescribable. It really has to be seen to be believed. But Rehr doesn't just focus on the external, he smartly takes time out for flashbacks and interior monologues, giving variety to the storytelling and visuals. While the ultimate lesson of Henrik Rehr's "Tuesday...
...FACTS. Any kind, but do get them in. They are what we look for—a name, a place, an allusion, an object, a brand of deodorant, the titles of six poems in a row, even an occasional date. This, son, makes for interesting (if effortless) reading, and this is what gets A’s. Underline them, capitalize them, insert them in the top, “Illustrate;” “Be specific;’ etc.? They mean it. There are plenty of Americans not weaned on harsh Sharia Islamic law who would object to the videos’ presentation of a perfectly harmonious United States. Despite what the state department says, it is not an effortless task for outsiders to be integrated into our Judeo-Christian cultural fabric. In my quite diverse Los Angeles public elementary school and middle school, we had a few very devout Muslims. For the most part, people respected their beliefs, or saved giggles about their requisite robes and foreign-sounding names for “normal” friends later. But they were...
...craft, queue now for Patrice Leconte's L'homme du train, a bittersweet fable about a chatty old schoolteacher (Jean Rochefort) who invites a mysterious gunman (Johnny Hallyday) to stay in his decaying chateau. It's rare to see a film so at ease with its diminutive size, so effortless in its charm and poignancy. Toronto had lots of celebs on display - There's Dustin! There's Denzel!! Sarandon and Sophia!!! But Rochefort, the wily veteran of 100 movies, and Hallyday, a rock star for 40 years, gave Toronto its most eloquent lesson in star quality...
