...lean, Austin-like sound--this is the first Hank Jr. album in which he has gotten away from Nashville's slick guitar tracks and banks of strings that work for the Ronny Milsaps of the world. Waylon's bit in all this is interesting--he has an ego you could stretch from Port Arthur to El Paso, and it must give him a kick to play a role of fatherly support for Hank Jr., to hear those lines "Waylon and Toy (Calder) are my only boys, I want to say thanks to you/Your fiddle and your steel made me play...
...also has the gentle memories of children. For however much his ego has needed the reinforcement of the crowd, he has been a most accessible public figure, striding into schoolyards and across sidewalks, a plainly gleeful Pied Piper who always, always signs autographs for kids. The touch of a heavyweight champion is a big moment to a child, and in some ineffable manner those titled men seemed drawn to children. It is remarkable how many ex-fighters work with children after retirement. Perhaps it is a means of staying close to the incandescence of their youth. Or perhaps...
Nothing weighty emerges from these characters' random encounters. What the film does produce is an unflattering portrait of Bob Dylan's ego. Real trust developed in September when Byrd advised Carter to let go of Bert Lance. Says Byrd: "Carter listened carefully, seemed impressed with what I said, and even asked me to come back later." Now Byrd is telling the President that his approach to Congress last year was too soft-sell. With party discipline weak, advises Byrd, Carter must create his own congressional majorities by force of argument, which he has so far not done. Quips Democratic Representative John Brademas...
...evacuation mission in the Marshall Islands, attended the wedding of a high chiefs daughter in Pago Pago, and talked about Somerset Maugham's legacy with former Samoan Governor H. Rex Lee as rain beat against the roof of the veranda. "Ego gratification and upward mobility, America's gifts to Micronesia, have changed the Pacific of Maugham and Robert Louis Stevenson," says DeVoss. "A $500,000 bridge is planned to link two outer Samoan islands I once swam between four years ago. Still, no change can dull the macaroon scent of drying copra or the taste of raw tuna...
