...airlines were hotels, most of them would be out of business. This familiar plaint of the frequent passenger was quantified last week with publication of a 1980 travel guide assembled by Egon Ronay, one of Britain's most acerbic critics of pretentious food and sloppy service. For the first time in its 22 years, Ronay's Lucas Guide (Penguin; $9.95) goes beyond its customary survey of British restaurants and inns to rate-and berate-14 Britain-to-North America carriers. Some of them may want to head for the nearest cloud...

(Not included in the survey, because they do not have direct U.K.-North America service, were Air France, Lufthansa and Alitalia.) The main thing seemed to be Brandt's six-month-long involvement with Brigitte Seebacher, 32, a political assistant. Fumed former State Secretary Egon Bahr: "At Brandt's age, what nonsense...
...forever. Hitler played a cruel joke on Hanfy, had him "taken for a ride" in a German fighter plane with orders to parachute out over Spain, a sure suicide mission. The pilot turned back eventually and brought Hanfy home, but the terrified Hanfy had had enough. He fled with Egon to Switzerland and then to the United States, where he waited out the war before returning to Germany to live in relative obscurity until his death...
