That Mess. This summer the city was shocked to find that Topeka State's psychiatric aides had staged, in effect, a one-day strike. They did not call it a strike, but an "administrative takeover," and they stayed on the job for twelve hours instead of the usual eight to show that they were willing and able to give the patients more and better care than the bureaucracy would allow. Later they changed the name of their demonstration, for propaganda reasons, to a "work-in." By whatever name, it stopped Topekans from boasting about their mental-health facility...
...cancer-type changes caused by a radioactive ring. When a man had a cameo ring remodeled in 1946, the jeweler inserted a piece of "new" gold. After ten years, the man had so much discomfort on his left ring finger that he transferred the ring to his right hand. Eight years later, that finger also was irritated and inflamed, so he stopped wearing the ring. Too late. This year, the left ring finger had to be amputated for cancer...
Raising Doubts. The accusations hit Wall Street at a time when it is already awash in problems. The stock exchanges are battling the Government in defense of their lucrative but controversial system of fixed minimum commissions. Under Chairman Harold Geneen, himself hired away from Raytheon, ITT has taken on some 500 men from other firms in the past eight years. Besides creating voracious appetites for instant manpower, corporate bigness tends to dilute employee loyalty, with the result that executives are more willing to listen to new job offers. What makes them even more susceptible is the fact that so much of the growth has been occurring through mergers. Says...
...Keeping his eyes on the skier, he slammed at 30 m.p.h. into a cabin cruiser, decapitating himself in the process. Equally foolish were the nine people who piled into a 16-ft. outboard and put to sea from York, Me., last June. Naturally, the boat soon foundered; eight of the nine boaters drowned. All nine might have been saved if they had only thought to carry life jackets. But a lot of people do not bother with them. And why? Consider the answer of one power-boater on Oregon's Willamette River when a Coast Guard safety check found...
