...great Wilsonian (he had cemented the relationship by marrying Daughter Eleanor Wilson in 1914), McAdoo came near the Democratic Presidential nominations in 1920 and 1924. Sidetracked by New York's Al Smith, McAdoo repaid that score and formed a second political alliance eight years later by helping to sidetrack Al Smith for Franklin Roosevelt at Chicago in 1932. At the same time he ran for the Senate with Hearst and Roosevelt backing, won his first big elective...
Taken over by WPA under Hydrographic Office sponsorship, the Tables last week employed some 250 white-collar Philadelphia Reliefers, headed by eight non-Relief supervisors, including six mathematicians. With a $195,000 appropriation, WPA figures its workers will make 9,000,000 separate computations (each value being computed twice independently and then checked), fill five more volumes of tables with an average 300 pages in each, turn the whole over to the Hydrographic Office for publication next year...

Ambassador to the Court of St. James's Joseph Patrick Kennedy, Mrs. Kennedy and eight young Kennedys; British Secretary of State for Scotland Walter Elliott (served every morning by a procession of hotel servants bringing his breakfast, hot water, clean towels); white-trousered Cinemactress Marlene Dietrich; the Duke & Duchess of Windsor. No French gendarmes watched this year to arrest nude bathers, since business-hungry hotel...

In the 6-4-4 system (notable example: Pasadena Calif.) the pupil spends his childhood in a six-year elementary school, feels his adolescent oats...
Fortnight ago the St. Louis City Art Museum announced with pride that it had acquired an Egyptian bronze statue of a cat for $14,400 from Manhattan Art Dealer Joseph Brummer. Same day, St. Louis newspapers carried a pathetic story about the eviction of a family of eight for failure to pay $15 a month rent. The conjunction of these news items proved too much for the editorial sense of the St. Louis Star-Times, which published an open letter to the cat informing it that its "visit" was ill-timed. Wrote the Star-Times...
