Soon the dealers of 57th Street began to besiege him. But Eilshemius, who had inherited a bit of money, had no sense of business. He let his canvases go for pennies to dealers who cleaned up. As his money dwindled, he began painting on bits of newspaper, wood from cigar boxes, even the manuscripts of the strange piano pieces he composed.
