...register to the other. James Parks as the wicked Governor Pizarro was dramatically the most successful of the soloists. He achieved a characterization where the others only sang well. This is not to slight his vocal capabilities--a bass-baritone, he took the high A in "Ha! Welch'ein Augenblick" and held it painlessly. The only singers supposed to be able to do that are Eberhard Wachter and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau...

...ensemble of 26 singers and 11 instrumentalists performed the cantatas "Der Herr denket an uns" (BWV 196), "Ich bin ein guter Hirt" (BWV 85), "Ihr Menschen, Ruehmet Gottes Liebe" (BWV 167), and the motet "Komm, Jesu, komm" (BWV 229) elegantly and unpretentiously. They produced a full but never heavy sound; the chorus's long threads of melody were sung smoothly and sensitively; the diction was inpeccable. Collins's phrasing and dynamics avoided the spectacular, but could be striking on occasion through their subtlety. He chose to take the final cadence of "Der Herr denket" simply and quietly, rather than grandly...

...elimination of these solos was all the more puzzling because the soloists did begin to sing in "Ich bin ein guter Hirt." Marsha Vleck, soprano; Jane Struss, contralto; Karl Dan Sorensen, tenor, and Francis Hester, bass, all sang clearly and sensitively, and, like the chorus, without any heaviness or pretension. Sorensen was especially fine, floating without apparent effort over long lines almost continuously in his highest register. Hester was stronger in "Ihr Menschen" than in "Ich bin ein guter Hirt," in which there were moments when he was almost covered by the orchestra. Penelope Ann Colwell and Cynthia Weinrich...

Patient Computer. The relative locations of the two sparks, which determine the direction from which the particle came, will be noted electronically and stored on magnetic tapes. Every evening, the tapes will be sent to Cairo's Ein Shams University. There they will be fed into a computer that will calculate and memorize the point at which each recorded muon penetrated the surface of the pyramid. Because cavities within the pyramid offer less resistance to speeding muons than does solid stone, a greater number of muons will penetrate to the spark chamber along paths that take them through corridors...

...only themselves to blame for their setback. Badly misreading his countrymen's sentiments, Socialist Leader Dr. Bruno Pittermann, 60, refused to dissociate his party from the Communists, who threw their support to Socialist candidates in all but one district. But Communist support was, as one observer put it, "ein Judaskuss." To most Austrians, Communism still means the rapacious Soviet occupation troops. As a result, Socialists by the droves deserted to the People's Party, giving the conservatives 48.3% of the nation's 4,530,294 ballots. The Socialist cause was also not helped by a former colleague...
