...SEEING HAND: A TREASURY OF GREAT MASTER DRAWINGS by Colin Eisler. Harper & Row. $29.95. The appreciation of drawings tends to be an extremely private pleasure-with good reason. Easily affected by light and air, sketches by the masters are usually kept locked safely away in museum cellars or, more inaccessible, stashed in private collections. Art Historian Colin Eisler combed the museums and collections of the world before allowing more than 300 illustrations to go public. He includes some of the finest examples of draftsmanship, from the French, German and Italian Renaissance to such moderns as Klee, Mondrian and de Kooning...
...this film adaptation he has pruned some of Brecht's more arid ideological asides without substantially damaging the original text. Somewhat less comfortably, Losey flirts with Brecht's best-known theatrical devices: he uses a chorus (as well as the excellent original score of Hanns Eisler) and stages the scene of Galileo's anticipated recantation in stark relief - huge shadows against a white screen dwarfing the fore ground figures. ...says Marie Kargman, an attorney who works with the Massachusetts Advisory Council on Home and Family. "Rights to property or continuity of residence have never been defined." When a child inherits money, his legal interests are usually protected by court order. Yet in a divorce, complains Los Angeles Attorney Eisler, where the entire fabric of a child's life is involved, "the husband and wife are entitled to counsel, but not the children...
...substantial gifts, he was offered the script of a shrill melodrama entitled I Married a Communist. He refused to film it. Later he discovered that to his bosses at the old RKO studio, anyone who declined the project was politically suspect. Losey's political history-sponsoring Composer Hanns Eisler, supporting Playwright Bertolt Brecht, signing a friend-of-the-court brief for Producer Adrian Scott, one of the original Hollywood Ten-got him into serious trouble. Soon he was called to testify by the House Un-American Activities Committee. He never received the subpoena, he says, but all employment abruptly...
...whole, as a success-if only for this robust fusion of music and dramatic spectacle. In Sanders, the slide-show of period engravings and photographs should make the mise en scene more convincing-and, with a little more coordination of scene changes, less awkward. In any event, Brecht, Eisler, Lehrman and his company merit the whole University's attention. Tonight may be a sequel to the teach-in. It may be something more...
