Certainly Bally and Berkeley are worlds apart, in upbringing and education, in language and athletic ability. But their stories illustrate the variety of experience and the alwaysfresh quality of the Boston Marathon. There is enough space, by the way, to mention that Johnny Kelley the elder, the Marathon's 69-year-old institution, trotted across the yellow finish line roughly three hours and 30 minutes after he started. ...hope of avoiding the sort of ambassador he had criticized during his campaign, Carter asked Florida Governor Reubin Askew to chair a 20-person panel that would review potential ambassadors. Its members include Democratic Elder Statesmen Dean Rusk and Averell Harriman, Republican William Scranton and a sprinkling of academics and authors. For the past month, panel members have been meeting at the State Department in great secrecy, sifting a list of 400 names submitted by members of Congress, the foreign policy community and Carter's staff. Still, all four sons serve courageously, with the youngest, Quentin, flying for the air corps, and the blustery old roughrider shouts a rousing "bully" at the news of every medal they receive...

Most Republican leaders, Gerald Ford among them, probably suspect he has yet to tell all about his Watergate ties, and so are afraid to pick him as a national candidate. (Hence Robert Dole.) During the election Republicans utilized Connally's ties to big money more than they did his campaigning ability. Ford even offered him the chairmanship of the party last year, but Connally declined this one-way ticket to the backstage and out of the national spotlight. Connally is too ambitious to be sent...
