...lunar environment is also ideal for cyclotrons and other devices that accelerate subatomic particles in a vacuum. For the same reason, electron beam-welding?which also requires a high vacuum?would be facilitated on the moon. Another joining process, cold-welding, could become an important part of lunar industry. In a vacuum, two perfectly clean and smooth metal surfaces?uncontaminated by oxides that are formed in the earth's atmosphere ?can be welded solidly together without heat and with little pressure...

...connected with the Cambridge Electron Accelerator which Mr. Glassman uses to illustrate some of his points. But we know enough about it to be certain that neither the physicists who proposed this project, nor the members of the Atomic Energy Commission who approved it, ever believed that it might contribute, even slightly, to weapon development. Furthermore, extraordinary care has been exercised to assure that expensive new scientific projects like the Accelerator do not commit the university to permanent investment. When they have outlived their usefulness these facilities will be eliminated far more easily than smaller ones contributed by private donors...

...article by James K. Glassman in the May 7th Crimson Supplement on the Future of the University, the Cambridge Electron Accelerator (CEA) is discussed as an example of Federal money being spent at Harvard. Indeed, because of its $4,500,000 budget in Fy 1969 which comes entirely from the Federal Government, Mr. Glassman has chosen a very good example...
