During the past year, Wilson's research has contributed to major improvements in the University's cyclotron. He will work with the new six-billion-volt Cambridge Electron Accelerator which the University will construct in conjunction with M.I.T...

...Mesic" Atoms. Closer study showed that the mu mesons, which have negative electric charges, had attached themselves to positive hydrogen nuclei and were revolving around them as electrons normally do. Since mu mesons are 210 times heavier than electrons, the laws that govern the internal affairs of atoms force them to revolve at only 1/210th of the distance of electrons. The "mesic" atom formed in this way is somewhat heavier than an ordinary hydrogen atom but extremely small. It can therefore sift through the electron defenses of ordinary atoms and fuse with their nuclei...

...which they prefer to ordinary hydrogen. A meson so occupied makes no bubbles, and this accounted for the gaps in the meson tracks. But when a mesic deuterium atom hits an atom of ordinary hydrogen, the nuclei fuse together, forming an atom of helium 3 and releasing 5.4 million electron-volts of energy. The meson shoots off, carrying the energy as velocity, and is none the worse for its experience. It may form another mesic atom and cause it to fuse with another atom of ordinary hydrogen. When mesons act in this way, they are behaving like chemical catalysts, which...

...breathes a small proportion of all the molecules of nitrogen and oxygen are ionized by cosmic rays-they become positive ions if they lose an electron, negative ions if they gain one. Philadelphia researchers have found that almost two-thirds of hay fever victims won quick relief in air that was heavily negative-ionized, snuffled and sneezed far more in air that was artificially positive-ionized. As a result, Philco Corp. plans to market a negative-ionizing air conditioner. ¶Automobile-accident victims often report "brain concussions" and are admitted to hospitals for study, but in 30% of cases studied...

Pair of Creation. In 1932, physicists discovered that positive electrons (positrons) are created out of energy by cosmic rays. They can also be made artificially by high-energy gamma rays from radioactive elements. Positrons do not last long; as soon as one of them hits a normal electron, both particles are annihilated, turning back into the energy out of which they were made. But the proof that positrons exist was a victory for believers in nature's symmetry. Better still was the fact when a positron is created, it always appears in a "pair" with an ordinary negative electron...
