Symbolism introduces an element beyond abstract design and structure. The symbol of the cross is the heritage of all Christians. I find the tilted cross in the interior of the Hope Lutheran Church in Daly City, Calif, disturbing, from the point of view of both design and symbolism. It introduces an asymmetrical element into an interior that, except for the sheathing, is symmetrical. I think that a vertical cross would have been better design...
...Good a Cure? Some Canadians wonder whether the cure might not be worse than the disease. Alberta Premier Ernest Manning charges the federal government with "catering to a small element of bigoted nationalists" in a way that could only bring harm to the Canadian economy. Many businessmen, particularly oilmen, who need big chunks of investment capital, argue that Canadians do not have the funds to finance major projects themselves. Calgary's Oilweek trade bible cited as a typical case a nearly completed, $90 million financing by Canadian-owned Alberta Gas Trunk Line Co. Ltd. for a pipeline-gathering system...
...painstaking, yearly physical examinations. The idea: to see if the onset of ailments in general could be accurately forecast by physiological measurements, i.e., weight, blood pressure, electrocardiogram, cholesterol count. So far, among other diseases, 27 of the businessmen have suffered heart attacks, 16 of them fatal. The common element in 18 of the cases was high (240-360) cholesterol levels. Moreover, it was the only significant common element. The electrocardiograph, says Keys, "doesn't hurt anybody and looks impressive in a doctor's office," but it is a poor predictor of coronary disease...
...Radar. FAA is working to eliminate the human element almost entirely and turn traffic control over to computers, is spending $200 million a year to develop an all-weather, electronically controlled system. Devices for the new system are already being developed and tested at FAA's experimental center at Atlantic City, NJ. One of the chief projects: three-dimensional radar, which, unlike present radar that shows only distance and bearing, will also show altitude. The FAA is testing an experimental 3-D radar apparatus, designed by New York's W. L. Maxson Corp., which picks up a target...
...time he wrote his next naval comedy, called Ensign O'Toole and Me, Lederer had chopped the humorous element to half its previous importance. In its place arose the concern for American relationships overseas that was to form the entire basis for the book following Ensign O'Toole--The Ugly American, written in cooperation with Eugene Burdick...
