...first prize at the Berlin Film Festival. Somewhat surprisingly, it is a flat-footed film with plodding photography and drab symbolism; the plot line (roughly Romeo and Juliet) has been reworked often enough; at least a fifth of the script might have been cut; furthermore, the propaganda element is badly disguised, and modern audiences tend to balk at any propaganda as a sign of poor taste. Despite these faults, Sky Without Stars succeeds absolutely; it has a shockingly desperate story to tell and three good actors with which to tell...

Modification of the present American position on passports and display of greater willingness to negotiate would not substantially improve relations, he stated. Nonetheless, such action would demonstrate to the rest of the world that the "element of irrationality" lies in the Peiping government. The United States must take down its "nylon curtain," Lindsay said, in order to make the bamboo curtain more conspicuous...

But Aron's views on the Fifth Republic's attempt to answer the question: "Is a democracy capable of waging a war of which an important element in the country disapproves?" are completely free of familiar cant, and remarkable in that respect at least. Except for a dull ache in the elbow (local anesthesia is administered) the operation is painless Because the arterial nerves are insensitive to the catheter's presence...

...attitude of the vast majority of the Japanese people to Communism is negative. Even the left-wing socialists are anti-Communist. The radical student movement has been rejected by the Communist party as too independent (although it was supported in the demonstrations). But there are some particular elements in the Japanese situation which I learned to understand. The first one is the relationship to China of 1500 years' standing. China is called "the Continent." It is the ultimate source of Japan's culture and religion. Many important Japanese scholars study Chinese history in all cultural and religious aspects and contribute...
