While it's small consolation to workers who lose their jobs, outsourcing has become an essential element of corporate strategy, even for small companies. "Any start-up today, particularly a software company, that does not have an outsourcing strategy is at a competitive disadvantage," says Robin Vasan, managing director of Mayfield, a venture-capital firm based in Menlo Park, Calif.
