According to the conventional wisdom, the clubs are sexist, racist and elitist institutions totally at odds with the progressive university community next door. They have wild, orgiastic parties at which, if they do not hire prostitutes, drunk co-eds are hauled upstairs for a quick screw by several members on the nearest convenient piece of furniture. They're sexist, elitist and pointless--unless you consider it useful to shelter the partying and bonding activities of young, over-privileged men already graced with admission to Harvard and all the glory that entails, including the right to live in beautiful Harvard housing. But that does not seem enough for some men. Some men need a home away from home, away from women, away from men less worthy of their company, a place to relax and bask in the glow of patriarchal privilege...
...dorm room, or anywhere, really. Most of the men at Harvard don't belong to final clubs and they all seem to be doing just fine. Actually, they seem to be doing a hell of a lot better than their clubby counterparts, because they don't need an elitist seal of approval to enjoy life at this school...
Harvard and Yale will play today to decide the winner of the Big Two, the elitist of the elite Ivy League schools. I have heard the argument that these clubs provide business connections, but those who join clubs usually have connections through their families. Clubs are elitist, I do not deny that. As far as I know, elitism and snobbery are not crimes...
