...four sons had not been at the house at the same time for 46 years, and it was a time for remembrance. Franklin, 64, John, 63, Elliott, 68, and James, 71, were together again at Campobello, the historic summer home of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt off the New Brunswick coast. Sister Anna died 3½ years ago, but the others had reconvened from distant places to tape an oral history of family life at what is now the Roosevelt Campobello Park. James, a business consultant, recalled that "when we were small and lived here, we didn't have...

...French Canadians in his native province of Quebec (see box). Swept to power on a wave of "Trudeaumania," he had once seemed the very model of a philosopher-statesman, blessed with an impressive intellect and an acerbic wit-not to mention a sensuous young wife. But last week Pierre Elliott Trudeau, 59, who had served three times as Canada's chief executive, was narrowly defeated in an election that he had suggested would decide whether his nation would remain one country or risk division into English-and French-speaking enclaves...

...Paul programs pair old and new, classical and modern in order to place one in the perspective of the other. A highly successful series, for example, featured the works of John Cage in tandem with those of Haydn. Cage, Elliott Carter and Hans Werner Henze have all served residencies in St. Paul. Almost half of the orchestra's selections are from the 20th century, and the majority of those are by American composers...

...wary phrase of a political rival, Pierre Elliott Trudeau embodies the attributes of "a philosopher and John Wayne." That dynamic combination has helped Canada's Prime Minister fight his way out of tight corners before, and after eleven years in power, Trudeau has held office longer than any other Western head of government. Last week he was embroiled in the toughest fight of his career as Canada embarked on a federal election campaign that Trudeau described as "the most vital in my lifetime." On May 22, Canadians will decide whether to give Trudeau, 59, a fourth mandate, or turn...
