Willie Shoemaker was in a snit. He was also in a quandary. In the Kentucky Derby, two weeks before, Willie had wound up a dismal third on the favorite, Rex Ellsworth's undefeated Candy Spots. Now, as the band played Maryland, My Maryland, eight thoroughbreds paraded to the post for the $180,000 Preakness at Pimlico. Candy Spots again was the favorite (at 3-2), and Shoemaker struggled with strategy. Should he try to match strides with Harry Guggenheim's pace-making Never Bend, the Derby runner-up? Or should he hang back until the stretch, then...
Taunting, Tempting. The works span a narrow spectrum from the formal purity of Ellsworth Kelly and Al Held to the geometric surrealism of George Ortman (see color). Kelly's naked statements of form are bland on the surface; yet he clashes colors like cymbals to drive the viewer's eye into more tranquil corners. Al Held boldly ladles as many as 30 layers of plastic Liquitex paint onto his huge canvases to spell out alphabets in monumental bulk. Slowly, as if one had stared for minutes at any word until it became meaningless, the letters cease being acceptable...
Double Trouble. The return home of even a token contingent of Egyptians was achieved by the quiet diplomacy of veteran U.S. Diplomat Ellsworth Bunker, 68, who last year put together the Dutch-Indonesian settlement that handed West Irian to Indonesia's Sukarno. Last week the United Nations announced that the parties embroiled in the Yemen civil war had accepted Bunker's proposal for a U.N. observer team with a double job. It will make sure that Saudi Arabia ends its support of the royalist tribesmen fighting to restore Imam Mohammed el Badr to the throne he lost seven...
There were nine thoroughbreds in last week's 89th Kentucky Derby, but as far as the crowd was concerned there were only three. And what a trio. Rex Ellsworth's California colt, Candy Spots, drew most of the attention, partly because of his huge size (16.2 hands) and partly because in six starts, he had never been beaten. "I've got the right horse," said his jockey, Willie Shoemaker, who had ridden six of the nine entries. But for the first time that anybody could remember, there were two undefeated horses in the field. Eastern money...
...mile race, the undefeated bay colt belonging to Mrs. Joan Whitney Payson, owner of the oft-defeated New York Mets, bore out on the stretch turn, still romped to a two-length victory that ran his record to five straight, stamped him as a strong contender-along with Rex Ellsworth's Candy Spots and Harry Guggenheim's Never Bend-for next week's Kentucky Derby...
