What a circus! And all to help actors in trouble. For the Union des Artistes in Paris, Actress Elsa Martinelli, wearing black opera hose, ran a couple of baby chimps through their paces. Dressed up as a bunny, Singer Jane Birkin popped out of a cake and walked a tightrope. The hit of the evening was a pie-throwing skit written by Director Claude Chabrol and starring Actor Marcello Mastroianni. Marcello then scrubbed himself down and returned for the 3 a.m. finale when the whole company dished up a giant vat of steaming spaghetti for the audience...
...apartments, mouthy analysts, slack children and enraged servants. But most of them have been killed by a buzz bomb in London in 1944, and they exist, haunted by old loves, fears and hates. Until we learn that they are ghosts, it is assumed that they are merely mad-especially Elsa. She is sure that a shoe salesman in a Madison Avenue shop is really an SS man named Kiel, long defunct, with whom she had a brief liaison during the war at a British intelligence installation. Elsa's shadow falls the wrong way-always a bad sign...
Even Muriel Spark's set-piece satire is only sporadically rich enough to stir interest, most visibly at a production of Peter Pan staged by Elsa and Paul's homosexual son, in which all the parts are played by people over 60. "It's sick!" members of the audience shout. A collective American voice replies, "Sick is real! Sick is interesting!" Not all that interesting, though. It is far easier in fiction than in life to distinguish the quick from the dead...
...formed from a silver spike in a parody of the iron nails used by carpenters. Or Otis Creative Craft's silver wristlets, hammered from antique forks into dazzling abstract shapes. Rings, too, are subject to the New Jeweler's wit, as with the illusory double ring by Elsa Peretti: worn only on the little finger, it extends across the ring finger, appearing to encircle both. At first glance Noma Copley's engagement ring appears to hold an ordinary solitaire complete with 58 facets. On closer examination, the "stone" turns out to be pure gold...
...sophomore at co-educational Concord Academy (annual fee for boarders: $4,100). While photographers clicked away, Caroline and a friend strolled around the campus, sipping soft drinks. Back in Athens, meanwhile, her stepfather Aristotle Onassis played host at a roistering party for his son Alexander, 24, Actress Elsa Martinelli, Odile Rodin (widow of Porfirio Rubirosa) and four other intimate chums. The evening ended in a tumultuous traditional session of plate smashing on the dance floor of the Neraida nightclub. "I lost count of the plates," said a witness, "but it must have been an Olympic record." Theoretically, the shattered plates...
