...Verrett's chick-embryo work, and the publicity she obtained for it, were not a factor in the decision to restrict, and later ban, the use of cyclamate in the U.S. An official of the Department of Health, Education and Welfare, in explaining HEW'S action, said, "It has nothing to do with previous studies of the effect of cyclamates on chick embryos or on studies of rat chromosomes in tissue culture...

...Verrett's book is outspoken. But it speaks nonsense. While Dr. Verrett acknowledges in her book that chick-embryo studies "should be considered in conjunction with tests on mammals," she fails to note that mammalian studies refute the teratogenic effects (birth defects) suggested by her work. The FDA and the National Academy of Sciences accept the more important mammalian studies as conclusive...

What first disturbed medical scientists was the way in which this possibly historic development was announced. Dr. Douglas C.A. Bevis, 55, of the University of Leeds was about to address the British Medical Association on "Embryo Implants." But before he did so, he handed out a press release reporting the three lab-assisted pregnancies, which he did not mention in his formal paper. ...warm, moist air moved northward to ward the center of the continent. From the West, a threatening layer of cooler, drier air seeped eastward toward the Appalachians, sliding under the moist air. As the two layers converged in an uneasy mixture, tremendous turbulence developed. In the roiling atmosphere, embryo funnels of spinning air formed, dissolved and reformed-a telltale sign that the tornado season had arrived...

...I.Q.s among children (below 55) are due to neuro-psychiatric disorders, the large collection of developmental disorders and illnesses which interfere with mentation. These are to a limited extent of a genetic nature (metabolic errors) and to a larger extent due to external influences which have operated upon the embryo or the growing child. (This population with extremely low I.Q.s includes children of highly intelligent parents; indeed, a so-called idiot or imbecile comes usually from intelligent parents.) The higher I.Q.s (55-70) among the mentally retarded are more often due to genetic factors. However, no one has ever found...
